Portland Zine Symposium (Aug 1-3)
by Jon Van Oast [uwi SITOme] [email Jon Van Oast] 2003-04-09 08:14:28 [6402]
The Portland Zine Symposium is put together by a group of local organizers, activists, artists, and zinesters who seek to create community between different producers of independent media and art. Another focus is to help people share skills and information related to zine culture. The Portland Zine Symposium is a place for people to network, explore ideas, build skills and of course, trade zines. Through hands-on workshops and discussions, the conference will examine the role and effect of all types of zines on both underground and mainstream culture.

The focus of this year's symposium is It Takes All Kinds. Workshops and panels are plentiful during the weekend to support this theme of diversity. During the three days you could take a class on Zines and Motherhood, The History of Zines, Bookbinding or How to Distribute your Zine (and others). In between the classes zine enthusiasts will have ample time to peruse other people's wares and socialize. Last year the symposium attracted about 1,000 local and national participants.
