About This Piece:

This is a piece dedicated to the notion of rethinking the Freudian term, "penis envy". Feminists originally rejected psychoanalysis because of the concept ; Freud on the other hand understood feminism as a manifestation of this very thing. If nothing else, this made the connection between envy and feminism loaded, to say the least. Back in the early 70's, feminism was in militant opposition to, or denial of, women's envy of a) men and b) other women.

Since 1972, this entire configuration has changed. A number of feminist scholars in the late 70s and the 80s turned to Freud, finding value there, despite the infamous "penis envy." Currently, feminist interest in psychoanalysis has lessened, but what there is has broadened beyond Freud. Envy has shifted from matters of identity and identification to matters of affective capacity and creative potential-

This original, one-of-a-kind mixed media collage's strongest point is the rich, jewel-toned color that swirls and reflects glints of light here and there among the dips and peaks of the heavy texture. Handmade, imported papers were used in layers with gel medium and other compounds such as metallic paints and inks that highlight this vintage photo transfer to create a unique piece of art.
