Do you think TV represents things the way they are? No, I do not.

What do you think about the news on television? The news, the news is not news, it's entertainment. It's show biz. With the anchors and all the reporters all over the world, it's mostly entertainment. And it is entertainment, and even the networks don't even try to disguise that fact. They're trying to sell the time, increase the audience. And in the process, they don't inform as they should.

If you could, how would you like to change that? One thing I would do would be require the networks to have commercial free news hours, just like Jim Lehrer does now. If they're really going to earn their licenses from the FCC, then they should be willing to give up some income selling news spots during the news time and forget all the hoopla and entertainment that goes with the news now, and give it straight from the news room, in large part. More, certainly more, live coverage or on the spot coverage of breaking news, whether it's disastrous or a speech or something like that. But a better use of the air waves by the networks to inform and enlighten the public.
