Gambatte can mean a lot of things in the same way that the Hawaiian word "aloha" has various meanings.

The most common meaning for gambatte in conversational Japanese translates in English to a combination of "Good luck!" and "Try your best!" It is something a mother would tell her child before a difficult exam or what a coach would tell a sports team before competition.
