Well, part of it might be looking at the file size before you save it to jpg? For instance your file uncompressed is 599k in Photoshop but saved as jpg is 164k. A completed grid file is 594k and saved as a jpg is 92k.

So why the difference? Cause jpeg works by taking pixels of the same color, throwing some of them out and then keeping a notation as to which colors to replace when it reopens. Your snapshot has a bunch more pixels due to all the filtering, etc. therefore there's more color information to compress.
