Description: This is one from my travel sketchbook. I was "on the road" from Aug 20 to Oct 22, 2005, and I did this while in Victoria. Since the written description I included with the sketch won't be readable in its original format, here goes: Built in 1922 by the same people who built the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge, this drawbridge connects downtown Victoria (east side) with Esquimalt (west). This is one of my most favorite bridges i all of North America for a few reasons. First, It's got two separate spans, one for automotive traffic and one for ped, bike, and TRAIN traffic! A daily train from Courtenay and Naniamo (further north "up (Vancouver) island") crosses the bridge and drops passengers off at one of the smallest railway stations I know. And this train is a Budd RDC (rail diesel car), a locomotive and passenger car all-in-one! And it's also a beautiful bridge. I love old bridges like this, more busy looking than the "clean" highway bridges we have today. Over the years, several "civic leaders" have proposed tearing down this structure with a high level bridge for "greater efficiency". Thankfully this sky blue relic from an earlier era remains to grace Victoria. Drawn with tech pens.
