I think the centre is always going to tend to hold attention because we are always composing around it and in a square format. On the other hand since the details in the centre tend to be small elements around the outside can gather attention away from the centre. Centre is center and that is where eyes tend to go. As for composition - whether successful or not I always try to relate my squares to the whole by echoing elements already there. Colour for example. Generally I find it easier to collaborate when there are many different contributers, maybe because there is more choice about what to respond to. "Democracy" The only way I can see that concept as relevant is that we have input on the rules of the game. Isn't it more like a "benevolent dictatorship?" The creators make the rules and invite us to play. It's a good game and it definitely falls within the boundaries of that large amorphous body of things and activities labelled art.
